Overview
A national park you can reach by breakfast
Fitzroy Island sits 45 minutes off Cairns and it's a genuine national park, not a resort with a beach attached. The Fitzroy Island day tour from Cairns is the 8am boat out and the 5pm boat back, which is the longest run the timetable allows. Play it right and you'll have a walk, a swim and a snorkel done before lunch.
Getting there
Berth 20 at the Marlin Marina Wharf, check in at least 30 minutes before the 8am departure with your QR code ready. The crossing runs about 45 minutes. Coming home, be down at the island jetty in good time for the 5pm return.
What's actually worth doing
Nudey Beach is the one people come for, an easy walk through rainforest from the jetty and routinely rated among the best beaches in the country. The Secret Garden walk is short and easy. The summit track is the hard one, worth it if the day isn't too hot. The turtle rehabilitation centre runs talks Tuesday to Sunday, and it's the thing most day visitors wander straight past.
Snorkelling is off the beach here, no boat required. Right now is the good window for it too. Stinger season doesn't start until November and the water is about as clear as it gets.
What costs extra
The ferry is the fare, and that's it. Snorkel gear hire, the glass bottom boat, kayaks, dive courses and lunch at Foxy's or Zephyrs all happen island side and all cost extra. Bring a card.
That's the best part of a full day on the island, which is what a place like this actually needs. Explore what else runs out of Marlin Marina, then check availability on the Fitzroy Island day tour from Cairns for your date.
